BREAKING: The Ballon d’Or will not be awarded in 2020, as a result of Covid-19 crisis


The annual football event and prestigious award which is usually presented by the French news magazine France Football has been canceled for the year 2020

The Ballon d’Or also regarded as the most prestigious individual award for football players

The award became a global prize in 2007 with all professional footballers from around the world being eligible

Lionel Messi has won the award a record six times while playing for Barcelona, followed by Cristiano Ronaldo, who has won five (one with Manchester United and four with Real Madrid), the two player has been the fierce rival for the award

Meanwhile, the women’s Ballon d’Or, which was first awarded in 2018, has also been cancelled.

However, this is the first time since 1956 that the Ballon d’Or will not be awarded.

According to France Football: “Such a year cannot – and should not – be treated as an ordinary year.

“We did not want to put an indelible asterisk on the prize list like ‘Trophy won in exceptional circumstances due to the Covid-19 health crisis’.”
