Professor Ben Ayade, Governor of Cross River State, has appointed an acting Vice Chancellor of the Cross River State University of Technology (CRUTECH).
Professor Ogar David Abua of the University of Calabar (Unical) has been appointed Acting VC for CRUTECH. This appointment comes into effect on November 7, 2019.
According to our findings, this appointment went against the choices made by the University Academic Staff Union (ASU), an evolution that could lead to conflicts between the governor and the USS.
The union is committed to not holding any other candidates outside any of the five names submitted to the governor.
CRUTECH Registrar Gabriel Beshel, who confirmed the appointment to DAILY POST via a telephone conversation, said however that the ASU had nothing to do with the appointment.
“Governor Ben Ayade is the visitor to the university. It is he alone who has the power to appoint the VC of the university. He has the power to appoint anyone to an acting position at the University. ASU does not have such powers and we have no idea of its choice ”
The chief press secretary of the state, Christian Ita, also confirmed the appointment, stating that the press release to this effect came from the office of the secretary of the state government.
Already, there is tension at the university, with the ASU CRUTECH chapter convening an emergency meeting to develop tools at the university.
Meanwhile, university professors returned the exam scripts of the final year students and other students to the Vice Chancellor’s office.
